City of Dayton Mourns the Passing of Former Mayor Jim Connelly

Dayton, Oregon, (October 20, 2025) – The City of Dayton is deeply saddened to share the passing of Jim Connelly, who served as Mayor of Dayton from 1989 to 1992 and remained a cherished member of our community throughout his life. Jim’s legacy was defined by service, education, and kindness.

Born in northeast California, Jim devoted his life to making a difference. After earning a teaching degree from Chico State, he taught in Dayton from 1977 to 2003, where he inspired generations of students, coached countless athletes, and served as a dedicated Teachers Union leader. A proud U.S. Navy veteran and recipient of the Naval Commendation Medal for heroism, Jim continued his lifelong service through his work with the VFW, as a Trustee for Pioneer Evangelical Church, and as Mayor of Dayton.

Known affectionately as “Mr. C,” Jim’s voice became part of the community through decades of announcing athletic and local events. In 2017, he was honored as the Old Timer’s King, sharing his simple but powerful advice to youth: “Be you, be who you are, be honest.”

Jim’s legacy of dedication to his country, his community, and his family will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be remembered with deep respect, gratitude, and fondness.
